Recently the Department of Health and Human Services launched a Web site (http://www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov/) where you can measure the performance of hospitals according to 26 objective criteria such as how often hospital personnel give aspirin to heart attack patients.
I am pleased to see the government taking steps to make objective information available to the general public. Consumers can now research hospitals in their area and make informed choices on where they would like to receive treatment.
I believe hospitals will also benefit by accessing this information as it will foster competition in the marketplace. Hospitals that consistently score well on the Web site criteria will surely see an increase in informed patients choosing their respective facilities. In today’s competitive health care market, other hospitals will be incentivized to increase its scores thereby delivering better quality care.
